Bigger isn't better. Focused is better.
Narrowing to QuickBooks business owners felt terrifying. It was the best decision I ever made. The right clients make everything easier.
Every business owner has a moment where they realize working harder isn't the same as working smarter. This is ours — and it's why we do things differently now.
I started Adam Hodson CPA in 2005 in a spare bedroom in my home. I had never run a small business on my own before. But clients came fast — faster than I expected.
Within two years, I had outgrown that bedroom. I moved into a small executive suite and hired my first employee. Then three more. The firm was growing — and on the surface, that looked like success.

Summerlin, Las Vegas — where the firm first put down roots.
As more work came in, more work needed to be done. I hired more employees to help — but that meant I spent most of my time managing people instead of doing the work that actually paid the bills.
After more than a decade of running what looked like a "successful" accounting practice, I was burned out. Working more and more hours with little to show for it financially. The business was growing, but I wasn't.
"I don't need any help."
I said it while thinking: I have a Master's Degree in Accounting and a CPA license.
A friend with experience building multiple CPA firms kept offering help. And for two years, I kept turning him down.

Finally, I took my friend up on his offer. What he shared was simple, but not easy.
I chose to limit my practice to business owners that used QuickBooks. I worried about financial ruin. That year, I let go of almost 20% of my clients.
And here is what happened:
Narrowing to QuickBooks business owners felt terrifying. It was the best decision I ever made. The right clients make everything easier.
Adding people to a struggling operation just makes the struggle louder. Fix the system first. Then grow.
I said 'I don't need help' for two years while my business ate me alive. Pride is expensive. Humility pays interest.
"I learned a valuable lesson from this experience that I now try to pass on to my clients."
That's why we're not just preparing your tax return. We're asking the harder questions — about your business model, your numbers, and whether the way you're working is actually working for you.
Adam Hodson CPA is now a tight-knit team of five serving Las Vegas business owners who use QuickBooks and want more than compliance.
We do year-round tax strategy, clean books, and the kind of financial guidance that comes from someone who's made the hard mistakes — and learned from them.
If you're a Las Vegas business owner using QuickBooks, we'd love to help you avoid the mistakes we made — and build something that actually works.
